Tybee St Patrick’s Parade
Last year we kind of “discovered” Tybee events. We did Mardi Gras and St Patricks Day parades plus July 4th fireworks and attempted Labor Day but the wind/sand storm forced us to leave. We missed Mardi Gras this year but thought it would be good to get the kids dressed up in green and go get some beads and candy.
We had intended on eating lunch locally since the parade didn’t start until 3:00, but we didn’t leave home on the one hour drive until around 1:00 and knowing how parking can be, we thought it best to head straight to the island and deal with food later. We still thought we were a little late getting to the island so we parked right across from city hall which is where the parade starts. We did a U-turn and parked on the opposite side of the road facing off the island. So there we sat in the car with nearly an hour before the parade started, hungry, with a car full of kids repeating to us how hungry they were, until we discovered the bag of Reese’s Pieces in the car door that held us over until the parade start.
The Tybee parades are certainly fun, especially for the kids. It’s smaller, shorter, and has less drinking it seems than the big Savannah one so dealing with four kids is much more manageable. There are also a LOT of the units that seem to toss out either green beads or candy, which is a sure fire way to get kids interested. They spent much of the time abating their hunger by hoarding the flying candy best they could. It’s also nice to see the Allee Shriner units there in full force, I think all of the kids got tickets from the Keystone Cops as well as pics with several different units.
We were trying to decide what to eat since it was now 4:00. we hadn’t eaten since breakfast, and the pizza place we always went to was closed this year. We considered Hucapoos since we hadn’t been there before but decided on Screaming Mimis in downtown Savannah instead. We know their pizza is good and Kellie had been wanting it for weeks before but we hadn’t made it yet. As soon as we said it all four of them yelled “YAY” anyway so off the island we shot. It was a whirlwind trip but we all had a fun time, I’m sure we’ll be back to Tybee for the next one.
